Music
Intent
Our intent is for children to become articulate, informed, and empowered musicians, developing a love for music through performance, composition, and appreciation. We aim to foster confidence, creativity, and self-expression while ensuring all children have access to high-quality musical experiences. Through our carefully structured curriculum and enrichment opportunities, children gain a strong foundation in musical skills and knowledge, with opportunities to perform, compose, and explore music from a wide range of cultures and traditions.
Implementation
We use the Charanga scheme of work, providing a progressive, engaging, and inclusive approach to music education.
All children in Year 3 learn the recorder, developing foundational skills in notation, rhythm, and performance, culminating in a live performance for parents at the end of the year.
Many children progress to learning a tuned instrument or singing, supported by our peripatetic music teachers.
Peripatetic lessons are offered in singing, drums, guitar, saxophone, piano, violin, and trumpet, providing pupils with opportunities to develop their musical talents further.
Performance is a key focus—children regularly showcase their musical achievements, including in assemblies, class performances, and our annual Summer Music Soirée, where over 100 children performed last year.
Listening and appreciation of a diverse range of musical styles are embedded throughout the curriculum, broadening children’s cultural and historical understanding of music.
Inclusivity is at the heart of our music provision, ensuring that all children, regardless of ability or background, have access to high-quality musical experiences.
Impact
Pupils develop strong musical skills, with many progressing beyond Year 3 to learn additional instruments or join choirs and ensembles.
Confidence in performance grows, with children embracing opportunities to showcase their skills in front of an audience.
Pupils leave with a broad appreciation of musical genres, including classical, jazz, pop, and world music.
Assessment and pupil voice show that children enjoy and engage with music, developing skills in rhythm, pitch, composition, and performance.
Music provides children with an avenue for creativity, self-expression, and well-being, fostering a lifelong appreciation of music.
Our thriving musical community is evident in the high participation rates in peripatetic lessons and school performances, ensuring that music continues to be a valued and celebrated part of school life.

School Choir - Spring 2025
The school choir is a vibrant and talented group of pupils who come together to share their love of music through performances at school events and community gatherings. With a diverse repertoire ranging from classical pieces to contemporary hits, the choir provides an opportunity for students to develop their vocal skills, build confidence and work as a team. Rehearsals are filled with energy and enthusiasm, fostering a strong sense of community among members. Please note that sign-ups for this year’s choir have now closed, but we encourage children to look out for future opportunities to get involved.
Below are the lyrics for the songs the choir will be learning and performing, along with tracks for those who would like to practice at home.
